BioNTech: Third vaccination for everyone over 18 years old

Following the EMA’s endorsement of a third COVID-19 vaccination for immunosuppressed individuals in early October, the European Commission has now issued an extension of its approval to everyone 18 years of age and older and to severely immunosuppressed individuals aged 12 years and older. The EMA Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) had concluded that people with severely weakened immune systems should receive a third dose of an mRNA vaccine. The background for this was several studies which had shown that patients with a weakened immune system often respond poorly to the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the EMA, individuals 18 years of age and older who have had their second corona vaccination at least six months ago may be offered a booster vaccine with Comirnaty. Children and adolescents 12 years and older whose immune systems are more suppressed can be given the third dose as early as 28 days after the second dose. The EMA bases its recommendation on a study of individuals with severe immunosuppression following organ transplantation.
