Comirnaty: Can now be stored thawed for longer

A new recommendation from the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) is easing the handling of BioNtech/Pfizer’s vaccine in vaccination centers across the European Union (EU). After removal from the freezer, the unopened preparation may now be stored at 2 - 8°C for one month. Previously, a maximum of five days was allowed. The change is based on an assessment of additional data from stability studies that the marketing authorisation holder submitted to the EMA. The aim is to increase flexibility in the storage and handling of the vaccine in order to better facilitate planning and logistics for introduction into EU Member States. The changes described are listed in the updated product labeling. All users are urged to always study the information on correct storage measures which can be found on the product label and package insert.
