EMA continues to recommend Johnson & Johnson vaccine
The EMA has analysed the vaccine data after cases of cerebral venous thrombosis were reported in the USA following vaccination with the COVID-19 vaccine Janssen. According to the EMA, the thromboses described in the US are similar to those that occurred after administration of AstraZeneca’s Vaxzevria vaccine in Europe. The most plausible, but as of yet unconfirmed, explanation is that the vaccines could induce an immune response that leads to the formation of antibodies directed against the body’s own platelets. As a result, the platelets clump together more easily and at the same time decrease in number, which in turn leads to bleeding.
